I. The Upward Gaze

In the summer of 1997, the summer she turned sixteen, in the weeks after the GCSE papers had been collected and carried off to be weighed somewhere by strangers, Bryony lay on her back on the dry grass of Hampstead Heath and looked at the clouds and told herself they were castles. This was a thing she did with Joni. They had done it since they were nine, since the year the horse chestnut at the bottom of Joni's road came down in a March gale and the council took three weeks to clear it, and they had refined the game the way children refine a liturgy, which is to say without ever once noticing they were doing it. One of them pointed. The other named. A galleon. A sleeping dog. A city you might live in, if you were the sort of person a city in the sky would have.

The grass smelled of dust and cut stems and the particular green exhaustion of London in July. The ponds below them held the sky the way a held breath holds a word. Bryony named a fortress iced in sugar; Joni named the white mane of an animal too large to be afraid of; and somewhere between them, low over the men's bathing pond, there was a ravine of cloud you felt you might fall into, except that it was only weather. They named a ship and then the sea for it to sail on. They named a face and could not agree whose. Joni lay propped on one elbow, broad and easy in the grass, solid in a way that looked built for staying rather than for show, the freckles across her nose and cheekbones stronger by the week, her thick curly hair gone tawny at the ends from the same sun and escaping the band she had tied it back with; and Bryony lay flat beside her, lankier than she wanted to be, the bleached ends of her long hair fanned out in the grass, her hazel eyes, which were flecked that summer with green and with gold, wide open against the light, missing nothing, certain that nothing was worth missing.

She would remember it that way, later. This is not the same as saying it happened that way.

There are things she can be sure of, and she has learned to keep them separate from the things she only remembers. She can be sure they had a bench, on the lower path, which was theirs in the way nothing is ever really yours, by use and repetition and the willingness of the world not to contradict you. She can be sure that Joni was the braver of the two, the one who went first into the cold pond every April while Bryony stood on the bank doing the arithmetic of it, and that Bryony was the one who remembered, who held the dates, the small anniversaries, the record of who had said what to whom and when, so that between them they made a single functioning person, one who acted and one who kept the account.

Joni lived at the wrong end of the right road, in a house that was always too full: a younger brother who was never not eating, a dog of no fixed opinion about its own breed, a mother who fed whoever was nearest, and a father who, on the evenings Bryony stayed, would put a particular record on at a particular point in the washing up and tell the one story. The story was the Isle of Wight, the summer of 1970, twenty-seven years gone now, when Joni's father had been seventeen, the age they were all hurtling toward, and had hitched down to the coast with eight pounds and a borrowed tent to see Hendrix, and had crossed on the ferry and walked up onto the down and stood in a field with half a million other people while the crowd outside the fence grew so large and so sure of its own rightness that it pulled the fence down and declared the whole thing free, by force of numbers, the way weather declares things. He was a man in his forties now, with a daughter the age he had been, and he told it the same way each time. Each time Joni's mother said, from the sink, that she had heard it. Each time Joni leaned in over her elbows as though she had not, because leaning in was the thing she did with her whole body, the gift she gave people without appearing to give it, and Bryony, watching, understood the difference between them and did not yet know it was a difference that would cost: that Joni spent attention the way other people spend money, freely, never keeping the receipts, while Bryony kept everything, every date and every slight and every kindness, filed against a day she could not have named.

They had a way of talking that needed no run-up. Joni would surface a thing from the middle of a thought, as she did that July on the bench, that she meant to stay in London her whole life, she had decided it, she meant to live three streets from where she had been born and die there, and that this was not a failure of imagination but a kind of loyalty, that someone had to stay and keep the place or what was the point of a place. Bryony, who meant to leave, who had a list of countries in an order, said that staying was only being too frightened to find out who you were anywhere else. Joni said that leaving was only being too frightened to be known. They were sixteen. Neither of them knew yet that they were both right, or that being right about a thing protects you from none of it.

What is also true is that the heat held into September, that the reservoirs were low and the news said so every evening, that the plane trees along the Spaniards Road dropped their leaves early out of something the gardeners called stress, and that on the second Saturday of the new term, at a party in a flat in Gospel Oak that belonged to the older brother of a girl neither of them really knew, Bryony met Auden.

Auden was in the upper sixth at the college, a year ahead, taller than anyone else in the room and arranged against the window as though the window had been put there for the purpose, a can of something held loosely, the way certain people hold things they have no intention of finishing. Bryony noticed the things she was meant to notice, because Auden was built to be noticed: the high cheekbones and the clean strong line of the jaw, the pale skin that took the bad yellow light of the flat and gave it back as something better, the fine ash-blonde hair cut and set so that it looked accidental and was not, the bright blue-grey eyes going round the room and counting, she would think much later, the house. The flat was too hot. Someone had put a record on, an actual record, and the needle kept catching. Auden said the catch was the best part, that you waited for it now, that anticipation was the only pleasure that improved with knowledge. Bryony, who did not yet know whether this was clever or only the sort of thing that sounds clever in a hot flat at eleven at night, laughed. When Auden turned the full smile on her it was like a window thrown open, like being the one lit thing in a dark room, and she did not yet know that a smile that good is a thing a person learns, that it is a door you are shown through and not a room you are let into. It looked like the easiest thing in the world, the standing by the window, the loose can, the not-finishing. She understood much later that it was the opposite of easy, that the placement against the window had been chosen the way you choose a chess move, that the whole evening Auden had been running a quiet arithmetic underneath the charm, reading the room, calculating the exact wattage that would hold the attention without seeming to ask for it, and that the cost of this was a vigilance that never once switched off. At sixteen she read the ease and missed the labour. She thought she was seeing someone to whom it all came free, when in fact she was seeing someone for whom nothing came free, ever, who had decided very young that the only safety lay in being wanted.

They saw each other every day that autumn. They walked the towpath at Camden in the cold and Auden named the narrowboats, which all had names the way the clouds had names, the Marguerite and the Kingfisher and one simply called Enough, which Auden said was the only honest boat on the canal. They got off the Northern line at stations for the names alone, though never at Mornington Crescent, which had been shut for years and boarded, so that they played the wireless game instead, calling the stations back and forth in the daft solemn voices off the radio, and got out at Chalk Farm, and at Tooting Bec because Auden liked the way it sounded like a small ruined kingdom. They sat in the cafe by the ponds that did the cardboard tea and did not drink it, only held it, while the radio behind the counter played the slow sad string-laden guitar songs that were everywhere that autumn, all minor keys and orchestras and young men sounding tired of being young, and Bryony learned the holding, the art of carrying a thing you have no intention of finishing, and did not notice that she was learning it, or from whom.

There was a night in November that she would keep. They were in Auden's room, which was not what she had expected, which frightened her a little for being so bare, a room arranged the way the rest of Auden was arranged, for being looked at, nothing in it that could be used against the person who lived there. Auden's parents were downstairs, and they were handsome and loud and they performed their marriage for the room the way some people perform a sport, and at dinner Auden had been the brightest possible version of Auden, quick and golden, passing the brightness round the table like a dish. Bryony watched the mechanism of it work. When Auden was funny, the father's hand came to rest a moment on Auden's shoulder; when Auden was quiet, the hand did not come, and the attention slid off elsewhere, to the wine, to the guests, and Auden visibly felt it go and worked to call it back. It was so practised on both sides that no one at the table but Bryony seemed to notice the rate being charged, that the warmth in that house was a thing you bought back into every few minutes or lost, that nobody there had ever been loved while simply sitting still. She watched Auden's mother watch Auden and felt something she had no word for go cold along her arms.

Later, upstairs, with the lovely arranged face turned away toward the dark window, Auden said a thing in a voice Bryony had not heard before, flatter, younger, with the performance laid down beside it like a coat taken off. Auden said that the trouble with being liked was that it never finished, that you could not put it down, that the instant you stopped being delightful you found out very fast how much of the loving had been for the delight. It was learned early, Auden said. And then, still to the window: I do not actually know what is left if you take the show away. I have never once been brave enough to find out, and I do not think I am the kind of person who finds out. She has wondered since what that room was on the nights she was not in it, the bare room with nothing in it that could be used against its occupant and, she sees now, nothing in it that could comfort one either, no clutter of a real life, no evidence; and she has come to think that the bareness was not taste but terror, that to be alone in it with the show switched off was to be alone with nothing at all, and that this was why there was always the next party heard about, the next person to be the lit thing for, the receiver lifted in the hall the instant a silence threatened to become a mirror.

Bryony, sixteen, certain past argument that she was the exception to every rule a person had ever made about themselves, thought: I will be the one who is let in. I will be the room. She has thought a great deal since about that sentence, which she now believes to be the most dangerous a young person can think, and about the fact that she thought it with her whole heart, and that Auden, who had just told her the truth, watched her think it across her open face and said nothing to stop her, which was either a cruelty or a kindness or, most likely, the thing that most things turn out to be, which is both.

So she told Auden the dreams. This is the part she could not later forgive, not the dreams but the telling, the careful unwrapping of each one, the small foolish ceremony of it: the flat she would have, which had a particular window; the countries, in their order; the way she meant to live, which she described in detail as though living were a room you furnished rather than a weather you stood out in. There were couples all around them that autumn coming apart in the usual ways, in the common rooms and the bus queues and the long whispered phone calls made from the foot of the stairs at two in the morning, and Bryony catalogued them the way you read about a disease in a country you will not visit, with sympathy and without application, certain that what she had was a different substance entirely, finer, more exactly made, that heartbreak was a thing that happened to people who had loved more carelessly than she was capable of loving. She told Auden about the bench, and about Joni, and about the clouds, which were the one thing she should have kept, the one thing that was not hers alone to give. She has thought since that this was the first wall coming down in the wrong place, the load-bearing one, though she did not know then which walls a person is built of.

On Bonfire Night they went to the funfair that came every November to the common, the travelling kind, the kind that arrives in the dark on lorries and is gone by the weekend leaving two bald rectangles in the grass. It smelled of diesel and fried onions and the sugar-burn of candy floss, and the generators thumped under everything, and the lights of the waltzers swung colour across the wet faces of the crowd. Auden wanted the big wheel. It was Auden's idea and it was, Bryony said, a stupid idea, a little kids' idea, and they did it anyway, which was the whole of that autumn in a single gesture. The painted gondola lurched and swung as the man loaded the wheel a pair at a time, and they went up in stages, stopping and starting, and at each stop the whole fair dropped away beneath them, the stalls and the dodgems and the coconut shy, and beyond the fair the common went dark, and beyond the common the orange sodium glow of London lay under a low sky, and all across it, near and far, the fireworks were going up, blooming and falling, so that the city looked for once like the thing she had always believed it secretly was, a place where something was always about to begin. At the top, where the wheel paused to let the last pair on and the gondola rocked and seemed for a moment not to be moving at all, Auden said something she did not quite catch under a bang of fireworks and she said yes to it without knowing what it was, because she had reached the place where she would have said yes to anything. The wheel is always turning; this is the thing about the wheel she would only understand later, that the stillness at the top is the lie of it, that you are never not descending, that the machine has you on its curve the whole time and the view is only the part where you forget. She believed, that night, swinging in a cold painted box above the fair with the fireworks opening over the whole turning city, that every story she had ever been told about how a life was supposed to go was true, and was about to happen to her, and would not stop.

She had looked at love, that winter, only from the side of the giving. She did not yet know there was another side. She did not yet know that there is always another side, and that you do not get to choose which one you are standing on when the ground decides to show it to you.

II. The Downward Glance

The thing about a London winter is that it does not arrive, it accrues. There is no morning on which you wake and find it has come; there is only a Tuesday in late January on which you understand it has been here for weeks, that the light has not been right since you stopped watching, that you cannot remember the last dry pavement. It was on such a Tuesday, or a day she would later assign to such a Tuesday, that Auden ended it.

It was done in a Pret on the Tottenham Court Road, which Bryony found in the months after that she could not forgive either, not the ending but the venue, the chiller cabinet of identical sandwiches, the man behind her ordering a cappuccino in a voice of enormous patience, the radiator ticking, the steam on the inside of the glass. Auden was kind about it. That was the worst of it, the kindness, the lovely arranged face arranging itself once more, the cheekbones and the clear skin and the just-so hair and the blue-grey eyes that had once seemed to see only her and that she understood now had been all the while watching how they themselves were being seen. Auden said the practised things. And then a thing Bryony had not been braced for, said lightly, almost as an aside, while looking at the steam on the glass: that the narrowboats with their names, and the stations chosen for their sounds, and the whole slow charmed cartography of that autumn, had been, Auden supposed, a way in. Auden had seen what she wanted and shown it to her. Auden said this without cruelty and, worse, without much interest, the way you return a borrowed thing you had stopped noticing you held, and added that it had not felt like lying at the time, that it had only felt like manners, like being good at the one thing Auden had ever been good at. And then, once, an unpractised one. Auden said that Bryony had begun to look at Auden the way Auden's mother looked at Auden, as though there were a debt, as though all the delight had been a deposit paid against something, and that Auden could not, was sorry, that this was the thing Auden always did and would presumably always do, and that she should try not to take it personally though Auden knew that she would. The word always came twice. Bryony understood much later that Auden had been describing a prison and mistaking it, in the describing, for a self.

She did not cry in the Pret. She has held on to this. She finished the coffee she did not want and said something light and left first, which she had read somewhere that you should do, and on the Tottenham Court Road she found the rain had started, the fine London rain that is less a weather than a condition, and she walked into it as though into a door.

She told Joni that evening, on the bench, in the dark, in the cold, and Joni did the right things, sat close and said little and did not try to mend a thing that was not yet ready to be mended, the things Bryony would, within weeks, fail entirely to do for her. Joni said that Auden had never deserved the dreams, which was kind and not the point. The point, which Bryony could not say, was that she had given them, that the error was hers and structural and would have to be corrected at the source. She walked home alone, past the closed shops, the dry cleaner and the video rental place with its posters peeling under the security grille and the estate agent with the lit window full of flats she would never have, and somewhere on that walk she began, without deciding to, to take herself apart.

What came was not grief, which she had braced for. It was the opposite of grief, which she had not. It was a great flatness, the sense that someone had turned the volume of the world down, and then, finding it still too loud, down again. She would sit on the top deck of the 24 and watch the people get on at Camden and get off at Mornington Crescent and find that she could not locate the reason any of them bothered, could not reconstruct the argument for the getting on and the getting off, the going to work and the coming back, the whole vast machinery of people behaving as though the next thing mattered because the last thing had. She stopped being able to feel the seam between a Tuesday and a Saturday. Food was a thing she remembered to do. She would stand in the shower until the water went cold and then stand in it after, interested in a far-off way in the cold as a fact, as information, the way you are interested in weather happening to a country you will never visit. She understood, in the way the body understands a thing days before the mind will sign for it, that the stories were only stories. That there was no plot. That there was no author keeping the dates, that she had been keeping them herself, all along, for no one, filing the receipts of a transaction no one had ever agreed to. That the sky was a system and not a sentence, that it had been a system the whole time, even on the bench, even when they were nine and certain it was speaking to them. She would look up out of the old habit and find that the clouds would no longer be named, that they had gone back to being what they presumably always were, water held up by temperature, on its way to falling on everyone without preference and without design. There was one afternoon she did not tell anyone about, waiting for the 24 in the cold, when a cloud over the Camden roofs assembled itself without her permission into a clear thing, a fortress, iced and turreted, exactly the old kind, and the old lift came up in her chest before she could get to it, the helpless gladness, the readiness to believe, and she stamped on it. She said the word vapour to herself, twice, like a person taking a tablet. She made herself itemise the physics of it until the castle was only weather again, and she felt, when it was gone, a small hard satisfaction at having refused herself something, and mistook the refusal for clarity, which is the exact error the whole of that year was built from. She caught herself, other times, listening for the phone in the hall in a way she despised, hoping in a direction she had forbidden, and punished each small hope as it surfaced, the way you hold a thing under water, and she came to believe that the holding-under was strength, that a person who wanted nothing could not be made to lose.

She told no one, because the one person she would have told was, that February, carrying a thing far heavier than a Pret and a boy, and Bryony, inside the flatness, could not make herself reach across the small distance and care, which is the part she has found hardest to set down.

Joni's father had a stroke in the second week of February, the kind that takes the speech and one side of the face, that arrives without weather, a fence pulled down inside a man by a crowd he could not see coming. Joni rang her from the corridor outside a ward at the Royal Free. Bryony was lying on her bed with the curtains drawn at four in the afternoon, and she heard the news, and she found, lying there, that she could not make it land. She tried. This is the thing she has never been able to explain and has stopped attempting: she held the facts of it, the corridor, the ward, the half a face, the man who told the one good story, and turned them over and could not get them to weigh anything, could not make the picture of Joni in that corridor outrank the picture of herself in this room, could only hold one of them at a time and the one she could hold was always her own. It was not that she did not care. It was that the caring had nowhere to happen, that her own pain had taken the whole of the space where another person's pain was meant to go, and that she lay there unable to perform the small ordinary miracle, the one she had done without thinking her whole life, of letting someone else's afternoon be more real than hers. So she said the right words in the wrong voice, and she did not go. She did not go the next day either, nor the day after that. She told herself she would be no use to anyone, which was true, and that being no use excused her, which was not. She told herself she would go at the weekend, and the weekend was the same colour as the week and she did not. Joni stopped ringing. This is what Bryony means, on the rare occasions she can make herself mean it, when she says she failed her friend: not a betrayal you could write down, nothing with a name, only an absence, a run of grey afternoons across which the phone rang out in the hall downstairs and Bryony lay still and let it, and then the answering machine took it, the little click and whir and Joni's voice gone careful and small leaving a message Bryony did not return, while three streets away Joni sat beside the man who had told the one good story and could no longer reach the words to begin it.

When they did meet, in March, on the towpath, Joni was thinner about the face and there was a roughness to her hands from something, the hospital soap or the cold. She had come, Bryony understood much later, with something to put down: a week of corridors in her, a father learning her name, a mother who had begun to cry at the sink where she used to say she had heard it all before. She had come needing the thing she had given Bryony in January without being asked, the sitting-close, the saying-little. And she read Bryony's closed face in the way she read everything, quickly and without effort, and Bryony watched her arrive at the answer, which was that there was no room here, that the friend she had come to lean on could not that day take her weight, and that to ask would only be to lose, on top of everything else, the dignity of not having asked. So she put it away. She said only, surfacing it from the middle of nothing the way she surfaced everything, that Bryony was being a bit much. Joni said it gently, which was worse. Bryony said she did not know what Joni meant, in the voice she had been practising, the voice that keeps the face open while it shuts the door behind it, and watched Joni decide, by the boat called Enough, not to spend the energy. There were better places to spend it. Joni looked at her for a moment with an expression Bryony did not have a name for then and would only be able to name much later, when she had grown one of her own to lend it, and then she let it go, and asked about the bus, and they talked about the bus. People let things go, that spring. Bryony was teaching them how.

She cut her hair in the same week. She had worn it long and loose and bleached her whole life and she had it taken off to something short and neat and sharp, edges you could have set a level against, and when the woman swept the fallen lengths of it off the cape and across the lino Bryony watched them go with no feeling she could find anywhere in herself. Her face was thinning in any case, the round cheeks of the Heath going to something more like architecture, and her eyes, the green and the gold of them, looked to her in the mirror to have pulled half shut, like windows in a house where someone has decided to keep the heat in and let no one see the light. She bought a darker coat, structured hard at the shoulder, and shirts that buttoned to the throat, and boots that meant it, and she found she walked differently in them, faster, hands driven into the pockets, shoulders up around her ears, going past things rather than toward them: past the bench, past the ponds, past anything at all that might ask her to stop and look up.

She decided, the way you decide a thing in order not to have to feel it, that she would leave every room laughing, that no one would be shown the inventory of what had been taken out, that she would never again perform the ceremony of the dreams, never unwrap a single one, because to want a thing out loud is to hand a stranger the exact dimensions of the wound they can make. She became, in the word the country keeps for it, hard. And she mistook the hardness, as Auden had taught her to without either of them knowing it was being taught, for a self. She thought she had found out at last what was real, and that what was real was that nothing was, and she wore the discovery like the new coat, structured at the shoulder, and walked faster, and looked at no clouds at all.

III. The Circus Crowd

The festival was Joni's idea, and Bryony went because saying no would have required an explanation and explanations were a currency she had stopped spending. She did not understand, then, what the festival was for. She understood it later. It was for Joni, who had spent five months in corridors and front rooms learning the new shape of her father, who had watched a man practise her own name like a foreign word and get it wrong and get it wrong and once, on a good morning, get it right, and who needed, with a need Bryony was too sunk to read, one weekend in which she was seventeen and alive in a field and not the steady one, not the one who coped. She had asked Bryony because Bryony was who you asked. She did not yet fully believe that the person she was asking had gone.

It was a large festival in the West Country, in the summer of 1998, in a valley that had been a dairy farm and would be one again on the Monday, and it rained from the Friday afternoon. The rain turned the valley into the kind of mud that takes the wellington off your foot and keeps it, mud that is less a substance than a position the ground has decided to take against you. There were eighty thousand people in the valley, or a hundred thousand, the number swelling each time it was passed along, and they had all come for the same thing and were having, Bryony saw, eighty thousand separate weekends under the one grey lid of sky, some of them golden, some of them the worst night of a life, all of it at once, none of it speaking to any of the rest. The toilets were a horror by the Saturday. The chips were nine pounds and cold. None of this was the point and all of it was, exactly as the Pret had been.

Joni loved it, or made herself love it, which at seventeen is nearly the same muscle. This is the last clear thing Bryony has of the Joni who named clouds: Joni in a borrowed cagoule, mud to the shins, her face up to the rain rather than down against it, holding both their cans above her head as they pushed toward a stage where a band neither of them had heard of a fortnight earlier was about to play the songs that would, by August, be the only songs anyone could hear. And then, in the crush, with the support act done and the long wait beginning, Joni told the story. She told her father's story, the Isle of Wight, the ferry, the eight pounds, the fence coming down, the half a million, shouting it into the side of Bryony's head over the rising noise because the noise was the only privacy a field that size affords, and Bryony understood, distantly, through the flatness, that Joni was telling it because Joni had become the only one left who could, that somewhere in a front room three streets from where they were both born a man was sitting with the half of his face that still worked turned toward a window, and that his daughter was standing in the rain keeping the one good story breathing on his behalf, the way you keep a fire in, the way Bryony had once kept the dates.

She should have heard it. She heard the words and not the thing. And because she could not feel the size of what Joni was carrying she did the thing the flatness made her good at, which was to be cruel about something small. She was sharp about the band, sharp about the mud, sharp about the chips, sharp, in a voice pitched to carry, about the people packed around them, whom she called a circus, a crowd that had paid handsomely to feel something and would feel whatever it was told to feel and call the feeling theirs. She remembers, with no fondness for the girl who felt it, the small ugly warmth the cruelty gave her, the sense of standing a clean inch above the field, the only one not taken in. She thought the contempt was a kind of intelligence, that to want nothing and feel nothing was to have understood something the eighty thousand had not, when in fact she had understood less than the drunkest happiest stranger in the mud, because at least the stranger had risked turning up to feel a thing. Joni stopped. Joni said, what is wrong with you. Bryony said, nothing, in the closed voice, the open face. Joni said, no. What is actually wrong with you, because you have been like this for months and I have said nothing and I am all out of nothing.

The colour came up in Joni's face then, the quick pink flush of the fair-skinned, throat first and then the cheeks, the way it did when she was angry or frightened or both and could not have told you which, and it was the only part of her that had moved in the year since the Heath. Everything else was exactly as it had been at sixteen: the broad shoulders and the soft strong build, the freckles, the curls coming loose from the band, the denim jacket washed and mended and washed again and worn for the benefit of no one on earth, so that being shouted at by Joni in that field was a thing very close to being shouted at by your own childhood, by the bench, by the cold pond, by every April she had been brave first.

The band came on. The valley made a sound like the sea deciding something. And inside that sound, which was the most private place either of them had stood in for months, the two of them went very still in the mud, alone in the way you can only be alone inside a crowd of eighty thousand, more alone there than anywhere, and Joni shook her head, slowly, the way you shake your head at a thing you have finally given up trying to read. You have changed, she said. And then, with the flush gone right up to her hairline and her eyes too bright and her voice cracking under the band: my dad is in the front room learning to say my name. He gets it wrong. He gets it wrong and he laughs so I will not be frightened, and I sit there and I am frightened anyway, and I rang you, I rang you from the corridor, and you said the words off a card. I keep waiting for you to come back. I keep thinking, she will come back, this is not her, and you do not come back. You are not even here now. You came to a field with me and you are not even here.

This is the moment Bryony marks, when she is honest, as the floor of it, the place she touched and pushed off from. Not the Pret. The field. The rain coming down on eighty thousand strangers without preference or design, and her oldest friend telling her that a man was losing his words three streets from where they had named the clouds, and Bryony standing in her structured coat in the mud feeling, for the first time in five months, the full unbearable weight of another person's actual life, a life that had been going on, in fear and in love and in corridors, the entire time she had been lying behind drawn curtains deciding that nothing meant anything. Nothing meaning anything, she understood all at once and against her will, is a thing only the unhurt can afford to believe. Joni's father, getting his daughter's name wrong and laughing so she would not be frightened, believed in the name. The belief was the whole of him that was left and it was not nothing, it was very nearly everything.

She did not say this. She did not have it yet in words; she had it only in the body, the way she had had the flatness, a thing felt days before the mind would sign. She said sorry, which was true and nowhere near enough, and Joni said it was fine, which was kind and untrue, and they watched the rest of the set standing a careful eighteen inches apart, two girls who had named clouds together for eight years. On the long coach home through the dark and the spray of the A303 they did not speak. Bryony watched the headlights of the oncoming cars sweep across her friend's sleeping face, or the face that was doing the thing you do instead of sleeping on a coach, the head against the cold glass, and she understood that she had looked, now, at friendship from both its sides, from the having and from the losing, and that neither side was the truth of it, that there was no window in the world from which you could see the whole of a thing at once, and that this was not, as she had spent the spring insisting, a reason to look at nothing. It was a reason to keep looking, and to keep being wrong, and to stay.

IV. Both Sides

She went to the house the next week. This was the hardest thing she had done and she has never told Joni how hard, because the hardness was shameful, the hardness was the whole measure of how far she had let herself go. She knocked on the door of the house that had always been too full and was now full in a different way, a careful way, the furniture moved for the chair, a rail by the stairs, and Joni's mother answered and did not say anything about the months, only stood back to let her in, which Bryony understood to be a kindness she had not earned and would spend a long time trying to.

Joni's father was in the front room with the working half of his face turned to the window. Bryony sat with him. She did not know how to do it and she did it badly and she came back the next day and did it slightly less badly. She learned that the words were in there, that they had not gone but only come loose from their moorings, that if you waited, if you did not rush to supply the word and rob him of the reaching, he would sometimes get there himself, and that the getting-there was worth more to him than the word. She learned to wait. She, who had spent the spring unable to wait for anything because nothing seemed worth the waiting, sat in a front room in the long light of that summer and waited while a man hunted through the wreck of his own sentences for the name of a daughter, and found it, and looked up, and the looking up was a thing she would set against every cloud she had ever named. She held two things in that room that a year before would have cancelled each other and left her nothing. The first was that what had happened to him meant nothing, that it was weather in a man's brain, a fence pulled down by no one, as authorless and indifferent as the rain in the festival valley. The second was that sitting with him while it meant nothing was the most meaningful thing she had ever done. She had spent the winter sure that the first made the second a lie. She understood now that they were not a contradiction but the plain shape of the world, the one the cloud game had been drawn over to keep her from seeing too soon: that the sky owes you nothing, and the front room is where you make the meaning anyway, by hand, by turning up, out of materials the universe does not supply and cannot withhold.

He still had the story. It came in pieces now, out of order, a ferry with no sea attached to it, a number too big to be a number, the word free arriving on its own with nothing to be free of. The World Cup was on that summer, the matches from France carrying low through the front room most evenings, and he liked it on, the green of the pitch and the rise and fall of the crowd, though he had stopped following who was who; and Bryony would sit with him through the long flat passages of play and learned that the commentary did not need answering, that you could let it run over the two of you like weather and be company in it anyway. Joni would fill the gaps in the story, gently, the way you steady a child on a bicycle by riding alongside and not touching, and Bryony watched her do a thing she could not herself have done that spring. Joni did not grieve the father who could tell the story whole and resent the one in the chair who could not; she held them at once, the loss and the man still there, and let the second be enough without pretending it was the first. When he reached a piece of the story and got it, she lit up as though he had never told it before, and the lighting-up was not performance and was not denial, it was real, she had found a way to take actual joy in the broken version, to want the ferry without its sea because it was his ferry and he had reached it himself. She was not less sad for it. Bryony could see the sadness sitting in her the whole time, underneath, not cancelled, only carried alongside, the way you carry two heavy bags and let each balance the other. That was the steadiness, Bryony understood, that she had mistaken on the Heath for Joni being made calmer than other people. It was not calm. It was work, the hardest work there was, the holding of the grief and the love in the same hands without letting either drop or drown the other, and Joni had been doing it alone across the exact months Bryony had spent deciding that nothing was worth the holding at all.

And Bryony began, that summer, to keep the dates for him too, to hold the order of the story so that when it came apart in his hands there was somewhere to put the pieces down. She had spent her whole life being the one who remembered and had thought it a small thing, a clerk's gift, the dull half of the single person she and Joni made. She understood now that it was the half that let the brave half be brave, that someone has to keep the account or the spending means nothing, that this was what she was for, and that being for something is not the same as a story about your life and is better than one, because it does not require the world to mean you well. It only requires you to turn up.

She kept turning up. That was the whole of the year that followed, her own upper sixth, the year she would later be unable to summarise because nothing in it would make a story and all of it was the point: the Tuesdays and the Saturdays, indistinguishable again but in the opposite direction now, full instead of empty; the bus to the too-full house, the sitting with him while the nights drew in and then drew out again, the slow relearning of words that some weeks came back and some weeks did not. She was there the autumn he managed a whole sentence and Joni's mother had to leave the room. She was there in the spring when he lost ground again and no one said so. She kept the dates. She did not once, across that year, mistake the work for a story about herself, and this, she understood, was the difference between sixteen and eighteen, the only difference that had turned out to matter.

The A-level results came out on a Thursday in the August after that, two years almost to the day from the afternoon on the Heath, her own results now, and there was a party in a pub on the Embankment, in a function room above the bar with a window that gave onto the river, and Bryony stood at that window for most of it with a drink she was not drinking and watched the Thames go by in the last of the light. The results, in the end, did not matter to this story, which was itself a thing she had learned and could not have believed at sixteen: that the events you are taught to arrange your fear around turn out, when they arrive, to be only weather, passing over you, leaving the actual landscape unchanged. Hers were fine. Auden's, she heard, had been better, a year before, and Auden had gone somewhere far and bright, and would dazzle it, and would leave it too, on schedule, before it could find out what was behind the dazzle, and Bryony found, testing the place where the wound had been the way the tongue tests a gap, that it had closed, that it did not even ache, that she could think of Auden now without heat and even with a kind of pity, because she had met the thing that made Auden, the bright cold dining room, the love that was only ever for the delight, and she would not have traded the too-full house and the rail by the stairs for it, not for anything, not even on the worst of the grey afternoons.

She thought, at the window, about the clouds. There had been clouds all day, high summer cumulus, the castle kind, the kind she and Joni had named, and she had looked up at them on the walk to the river and found, with neither grief nor joy, that she could hold both things in them at once now and had stopped needing to choose: that they were fortresses iced in sugar and they were water held up by temperature on its way to falling on everyone, and that the truth of a cloud was neither the first thing nor the second but the standing underneath it, looking up, knowing both, deciding nothing, staying anyway. She had looked at clouds from above and below, at love from the giving and the taking, at her own short life from the winning and the losing, and the lesson, if there was one, was not that one side was the lie and the other the truth. It was that there was a third place to stand, neither the innocence of the bench nor the armour she had welded on across a winter, a place from which you could hold the castle and the rain in the same hand and let them both be what they were, which was weather she had named. The flatness had been a story too, she saw now. Nothing means anything had been just as much a fairy tale as every fairy tale comes real, and a meaner one, and a lazier, because it cost nothing and asked nothing and let you lie behind the curtains while three streets away the people who loved you sat in corridors.

She did not, she realised, know how her life was going to go, and this, which she had been most frightened of at sixteen, was at the window the only thing that felt like peace. She had spent two years certain she understood things, first that the world was kind and then that it was cruel, and what had survived both certainties was the knowledge that she did not, after everything, know life at all, and that this was not a defeat but the shape of the thing, the one the stories had been drawn over to keep the children from seeing too soon. You stood under the sky. You named what you could. You kept the dates for the people who could no longer keep their own. You let the rest be weather.

Behind her the room did the things such rooms do. Someone was crying in the good way and someone in the bad and from the window they were hard to tell apart. A boy she had sat beside in chemistry for two years was telling everyone his grades in a voice that would embarrass him by Christmas. The DJ put on the song that had been the festival's song, the one that had been everywhere all summer, and a cheer went up, and Bryony thought that in ten years not one of them would be able to hear it without standing again for a moment in this exact room over this exact river, and that this was what a song was for, what the cloud game had been for, a net you throw at weather knowing it will pass straight through, throwing it anyway, because the throwing is the thing, because the throwing is how you say: I was here, I saw this, it went over me and I named it while it did.

Joni came across the room. Bryony watched her come, the way she had watched everything that year, though from a smaller distance now, and saw that Joni at eighteen was the Joni of sixteen almost exactly, the same broad easy build, the same freckles, the same curls she had never once thought to discipline, the same unhurried walk that hurried for nobody; and saw too the part that had changed, which was not on the surface, a steadiness that had cost something, the steadiness of a person who has sat in corridors and decided to keep paying the price of things. Her changes were all inside, where Bryony's had been all on the skin. She had looked, all this time, like the one fixed point in a sky Bryony had watched change and change again, and she had not been fixed at all; she had been moving the whole time, carrying her father's slipping name across the same months Bryony had spent deciding that names did not matter, and carrying it without once putting it down on Bryony to hold, even when Bryony was the person you put things down on, even when she had every right.

She was not certain of her welcome. Bryony could see the question in the way she carried herself across the room, and understood that the question was hers to answer, and that she could answer it either of the two ways she had learned across two years, with the warmth she had been so afraid of or the armour she had hidden inside, and that there was now, as it had turned out there always was, in everything, a third way she had not had before.

She did not try to make it what it had been. You cannot make a thing what it has been; that is the one trick the world keeps for itself. And she did not close the door, the cool half smile, the leaving-them-laughing, the giving of nothing. She simply turned from the window, with the river behind her and the castles dissolving over the city into the ordinary dark, and when Joni reached her and offered a small, uncertain, hopeful smile, the smile of someone holding a door open without knowing whether anyone will come through it, the smile that on the Heath had been wide and sure and was none of those things now and was worth a hundred times more for it, Bryony felt the thing in her own face give: the eyes that had pulled half shut against the rain two winters before easing open again, not all the way, never all the way again, but enough, enough to see by. Tell me about your dad, she said, which was the whole of what she had learned, the only prayer the two years had left her that she still believed in. And Joni, who knew her, who had always known her, who had been right that she would come back and right about how long it would take and right about the cost, took the eighteen inches back, and told her.
